Document Summary

Spore forming rods: bacillus and clostridium: both cause disease by producing exotoxins, release of potent exotoxins causes diseases, spores protect the cell from (good or bad) environmental conditions. Bacillus anthracis: causes anthrax; has been linked to confirmed cases of terrorism, able to make a protein capsule that protects the organism from wbcs and immune system; can change from vegetative form to spore form (round, very thick) Prevention and treatment: vaccine given to people in the businesses that require a lot of contact with animals, or people in the military being deployed to areas where bio-poison is a threat. Infant botulism: slightly different scenario, but same organism, same toxin, adults can ingest the spore and not be affected because of the low ph of the stomach. Clostridium tetani: similar bacteria to botulinum, tetanus prevents muscles from relaxing; they are in constant state of contraction.
