Denise: older sister, diagnosed with diabetes at age 2 in 1962. Was one of first kids to have it and treatment was difficult and included large needles: cheerleader at hoover hs. Parents: recorded everything in first years of treating denise including diet. Andrea: does not want to go to hospital right away, not given any sweets during christmas in minnesota. She is no longer the fastest: decides to go to hospital with mom and sister, has many fears and ideas about what it will be like there, seems worried about playing the sick role. Family: dad does acidosis tests on andrea to monitor her health, orange means she"s, grandfather and two cousins on dad"s side also have diabetes ok, purple means her body is feeding on itself. She claims it is a money making scheme. Fortunately her sample comes back clean the next day: returns home 2 weeks later and seem to have matured.
