Death and dying foundations: sanctity of life ethos. De nition: the sanctity of life ethos is the doctrine and principle that states that you cannot intentionally hasten death either by commission (positive act: pills, needles) or by an act of omission (withdrawal of food, water, oxygen). No matter what, this act is not to occur. Medical ethics was guided by the principle of religion. 3 normative assumptions (religious): stewardship: since life is alone from and given by god, life is thereby sacred with in nite worth, meaning only god can take it away. God gave it, therefore god takes it (loan), this is predetermined. To deny god of this action is to assert yourself above divine authority, the ultimate sin. Your suffering has transcendent meaning and purpose, and can be justi ed in individual circumstances because it serves a community purpose. Morals suffer, thereby being a constant reminder of the initial story of sin.
