One of the themes of tango is how the casual becomes destiny. The film predicates non-conformity, exactly the opposite of the conformist. It juxtaposes a corniced world in opposition to the real world. Tom says it, when he wants to film jeanne going forward through the house while walking backwards, and going through her childhood in reverse. Going forward through actual time by doing things backwards, against convention. They start with the sex, then small background details, then more, and then finally they have a date. The last part of their relationship, which is usually the first, is learning their name. But jeanne never learns his name because she shoots him. He sees it as everything he"s done up to that point has led up to his falling in love with her. It"s marvellous, it"s you, its your childhood, it"s what i wanted. Le retour an arriere: reverse gear, like a car, it goes forward, by going backwards.
