Chapter 61 estrogens & progestins: pharmacology and noncontraceptive applications. Estrogens & progestins: hormones produced by ovaries promote female maturation & help regulate ongoing activity of female reproductive organs. Estrogens affect bone mineralization & lipid metabolism. The principal endogenous progestational hormone is progesterone. 2 major categories of clinical applications of female sex hormones: noncontraceptive& 2) contraceptive. The menstrual cycle (28 days cycle): 1st phase day 1-14 = follicular phase, second half = luteal phase. Ovary 1) several ovarian follicles w/ 1 egg ripen; . 2) 1 ripe follicles ruptures causing ovulation; . 3) ruptured follicle evolves into corpus luteum; if not fertilized . Sperm travel up through cervix, uterus, then up into one of fallopian tubes (connect ovary to uterus) where sperm waits for egg release from ovarian follicle & where fertilization takes place. Estrogen acts on uterus to cause proliferation of endometrium. In midcycle, corpus luteum takes over estrogen & progesterone production & maintains hypertrophied endometrium.
