Materialism: all that exists is made of matter/ is physical. Standard model: all known matter particles are composite of quarks and leptons which interact by exchanging force carrier particles like the electron. Believed that everything was made of water. It can take on many forms and still be water. Believed that water was the ultimate principle and the one thing that could explain everything. Believed that water is just condensed air, so therefore air must be the ultimate principle. Believed there were 4 elements; earth, air, fire and water. Also thought that there were 2 forces; love (attraction) and strife (repulsion) Understood that there was a need for causes of change (like gravity) Held that all things are composed of unchangeable atoms. Combined and joined with others to form all things ( lego theory ) Can"t see atoms, just the things that they make. Pythagoras (born 570 bc) wrote nothing but had followers: school/brotherhood, created pythagorean theory.
