Adequate cause: effects can be clearly and distinctly perceived through the said cause. Inadequate cause: effects cannot be understood through the said cause alone. Active: when something takes place (in us or externally to us) of which we are the adequate cause. Passive: when something takes place (in us or follows our nature) of which we are only the partial cause. Emotions are increases or diminutions in the powers of acting that characterize the essences (conatus) of human beings. Conatus refers to the striving, which is not necessarily conscious, of all nite things in the world to persevere in their existence.
