Guns: weapons they used to conquer proved that they were more technologically advanced. Germs: spreading viruses which they had become immune to. Steel: creating and militarizing industries in the lands they conquered. Says it"s due to the geographic emplacement of europeans. Langdon winner: says technology shapes us just as much as we shape technology; technology is neutral, the user gives the technology a good/evil purpose. Secondary effects of technology are subtle but nonetheless influential. Technology is used to express authority, control and political power over people. Ideas: power (energy) is centralized; nuclear power (top-down, autocratic) vs. solar power (decentralized, available to general population, cheap, easy to use, and democratic). Overall: implies that technology has the possibility of being generalized into society; technology implies political motives and changes.
