Descriptivism aims to observe English as it is used. It is interested in the perception of
the meaning of words by those who use it. The 5 basic edicts of descriptivism are:
1) Language changes constantly
2) Change is normal
3) Spoken language is the language
4) Correctness rests upon usage
5) All usage is relative
Prescriptivism is normative in that the rules tend to rely on transition. It is obsessed with
Standard Written English (SWE) and makes distinctions between superior and inferior forms of
language. It is dogmatic and assumes that SWE should be the standard, but provides no reason as
to why this is the case. In general, prescriptivism is dogmatic, autocratic, and authoritarian.
