Contemporary moral philosophers largely overlooked the early thinkers (such as chinese sage. This is unfortunate as they let an indelible mark on future generaions. They have oten been set aside because they produced an unsystemaic kind of philosophy. They were not theoreicians and academics but saints and sages. We could argue that later philosophers only systemaized and expanded on the moral understanding these early authors bequeathed to future generaions. Although noions of moral law can be traced back far in history, early philosophers mostly did virtue ethics, sketching out a picture of the ideal human being for followers to emulate. Do not know much about this chinese thinker (confucius) but he is thought to have lived in the ith century. There is a small book enitled the analects which consists of about 500 short anecdotes about master kong or his disciplines. In a conservaive society based on class structure, master kong begins by associaing moral merit with noble birth.
