Chapter 1: what are the origins of brain & behaviour. Brain: physical object, living tissue, a body organ; behaviour: observable action. Brain is the anglo-saxon word for tissue found within the skull & part of ns. Spinal cord: all connections between brain & rest of body are made here (descends from brainstem through canal in backbone) Named central because it is the nervous system"s core & core structure mediating behaviour. Cns: made of brain & spinal cord; encased in bone, brain by the skull, spinal cord by backbone/vertebrae. Pns: all process radiating out beyond brain & spinal cord constitute peripheral ns. Neurons: nervous system if composed of cells or nerve cells - control behaviour. Brain compose of 2 major sets of structures: They communicate w/ one another, w/ sensory receptors, w/ muscles & w/ internal body organs (1)cerebrum (forebrain) Has 2 symmetrical halves called hemispheres (left & right)
