Stephanie baker fall 2017 part 1. Why study the brain and behaviour: how the brain produces both behavior and human consciousness are major unanswered scientific questions. The brain, the most complex living organ on earth: a growing list of behavioral disorders can be explained and treated as we increase our understanding of the brain. Major divisions of the nervous system: central nervous system (cns): the brain and spinal chord, peripheral nervous system (pns): neurons and neuron processes. Nervous system is composed of cells called neurons. Neurons in the brain communicate with one another and with: The brain needs sensory stimuli to develop and function normally. Heavily folded outer layer of brain tissue composed of neurons (cortex = bark) Animals produce behaviours that are inherited ways of responding (grasping) and that are learned example: primates using tools to collect bugs. Most behaviours probably consist of a mix of inherited and learned actions.
