Unipolar -> major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia) Bipolar -> bipolar disorder type i, bipolar disorder type ii, cyclothymia. Presence of a single major depressive episode & no history of a manic episode. Must have 5 of following w/in 2 week period -> depressed mood almost everyday, diminished interest, insomnia, feeling worthless, recurrent thoughts of death. You can diagnose depression shortly after death of loved one. First episode occurs after severe psychosocial stressor. Lifetime prevalence 10-25% for women, 5-12% for men. 60% who experience mde will have 2nd, 70% experience 3rd, 90% will experience 4th. 1 year after diagnosis, 40% still meet criteria. Depressed mood most of the day for 2 years (1 year for children) w/ no more than 2 months where criteria not met. Must include 2+ of following -> poor appetite/overeating, insomnia, low energy, low self esteem, poor concentration, feeling hopelessness.
