Document Summary

There are 2 parts to the nervous system. The central nervous system (cns) which consists of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system which consists of all other nerves. The peripheral nervous system is split into 2 parts: the autonomic nervous system and the somatic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is responsible for balancing internal functions. The sympathetic nervous system controls arousal and the fight of flight response. The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for calming and the rest and digestive functions. The somatic nervous system controls sensation in cranial and spinal nerves. It is monitored and controlled by the cns. Direction of neural information can be afferent or efferent. Afferent refers to information coming in and going to cns. Efferent refers to outgoing information leaving the cns going to the motor neurons. Cerebral cortex is the outer layer of brain. Gyrus (gyri) are the perturbing parts or bumps.
