(2006) women tested in fmri while experiencing shock. The conditions were (1) holding the spouses hand, (2) holding the strangers hand, (3) no hand holding. Results: if intimate relationships had no effect on the individual then all three trials would"ve been the same. However, unpleasantness and bodily arousal was highest for the no hand condition, low for the spouse and somewhere in the middle for the stranger condition. Bodily arousal was relatively similar for the spouse and stranger condition. First study: two choices presented to undergraduates: either wait with others or alone. 2/3 chose to wait with someone else in the severe shock condition. 1/3 chose to wait with someone else in the mild shock condition. Second study: people preferred to wait with those who were going to share their same fate.
