PSY 3171 Study Guide - Final Guide: Antisocial Personality Disorder, Recognition Memory, Psychopathology
Document Summary
Anxiety/stress: there appears to be an effect of anxiety on memory, but it is not clear. Studies found that accuracy of information recall by witnesses was negatively impacted by the seriousness of the crime. The more serious the crime, the less accurate was the recall (impaired the memory of eye witnesses). Other studies have also sown the opposite where individuals were able to provide accurate account of the crime, even up to 5 months after the crime. The findings explained that increased anxiety made the eyewitnesses focus more on the details of the crime. Suggestive questions: when the police interviews eyewitnesses, the way the questions are asked may induce false memories. Misinformation effect: a topic that has been studied a lot and introduces false information that could appear to be very innocent due to a person"s memory. Perception/attention: everything that we notice through our senses is encoded. May be asked to recall smell, or what one has heard.
