Gender Differences and Male Dominance
The two tasks of any study of gender is to explain difference and dominance (or inequality).
Why do societies differentiate people on the basis of gender? Perceived differences between
men and women which leads to division of labor, division of tasks (men getting more), and the
use of gender on the basis of difference between people.
Men typically get to define what is work and how resources are distributed, leading to a
continuation of historical trends in inequality.
Two schools of thought pertaining to gender differences: biological determinism and
differential socialization.
Most arguments about gender differences begin with biology. Sex differences are anatomical,
hormonal, chemical, and physical but there are ranges of maleness and femaleness. Sex is the
biological apparatus chromosomal, chemical, and anatomical organization.
The biological is arguably less political than gender. (But maybe not because of transgender?)
Cultural interpretation is important in interpreting your sex and gender -- your location effects
your perception.
Gender: masculinity and femininity as well as the meanings attached to those labels within a
given culture.
- Cross cultural variations
- Sometimes differences between theory and practice

Making Gender Visible (Men and Women)
- Until the 1970s studies of social life focused only on class, family, or race
- The last 50 years have shown an increase in the study of women, gender, me, and
masculinity
- This increase is typically due to feminist advocacy
- Gender is typically used as a construct or a constraint
- Masculinity was visible before this advocacy
Invisibility of Privilege: you may not notice your privilege, but you may notice you are different.
However, you think that you work hard but you are unaware of the barriers others face to get
where they are.
- Invisibility occupies powerful positions
- Poer eas you do’t hae to liste to other people elo you, the people with less
privilege are less able to advocate for themselves
- If you recognize privilege then you can change it
- People are typically defensive when you point out their privilege
Higher education was used to be thought to ruin women bodies and not make them suitable for
child baring.
