Division of labor produces a new type of solidarity in society: organic solidarity. Smaller scale societies- the division of labour is less specialized/ differentiated. Members of the society share the same values, based on common tasks and common life situations and experiences. Most of them share the same moral values and follow the rules of the group. Organic solidarity characterizes societies with a highly developed/functionally diversified division of labour. Organic solidarity presupposes difference between individuals- less in common. The growth of organic solidarity and the expansion of the division of labor are associated with increasing individualism. Law as representation of the different types of solidarity. Sociological classification of different types of law will reflect the different types of social solidarity because the law reflects social relations at their most stable. Example: criminal or penal which is punitive/vengeance based. Example: civil- restores order and the previous state affairs. Both sanctions derive from the same source; common/collective consciousness.
