Persecution and theological division became more prominent when they realized that the second coming of jesus was not near. Apostles oversaw religious communities and appointed leaders. Episcopoi: local leaders in religious communities, original apostles gave authority to them. This became core of the role of bishop in modern day christianity. Bishops: preach gods word, administer discipline, provide oversight for continuity and unity of the church. Presbysters: officials appointed by apostles for their spiritual gifts.
