15th century art in europe and 16th century art in italy. Read traditionally as a wedding portrait but some argue that the wedding took place a fair bit after the painting was completed. Contains a mix of religious and secular symbolism. Thought to perhaps be painted during a wedding ceremony on the account of the priest and the male figure holding up his hand as if to be taking an oath. The chandelier was painted in perfect perspective, one could digitally reconstructed with no issue. At the time this painting was made, perspective wasn"t invented yet. Almost all mirrors at the time were convex. It was a new technology to have these types of mirrors. Naturalism: realistic depiction of objects in a natural setting. Wealthy industries (wool and silk trade) in florence allowed the support artistic innovation. In the late 15th c. florence had more woodcarvers than butchers.
