Cultural = study of cultures and societies of human beings and their very recent past. Cultural anthropologists study living cultures and present their observations in an ethnography. Linguistic = study of language, especially how language is structured, evolution of language, and the social and cultural contexts for language (role of language in human social life) Charles sanders peirce: a sign is anything which stands to somebody for something else in some respect or capacity. It addresses somebody; creates in the mind of that person an equivalent sign, or perhaps a more developed sign. People have the ability to recognize natural signs and produce (& recognize) non-natural. Humans exploit the capacity of other individuals to recognize signs. Non-natural meaning: humans get other humans to recognize that they intend to communicate by means of signs.
