Ant-102- Age, Aging and generation
Introduction: human body would live about 90 yrs but most stable at 18
30 and then aging begins, bodies stops working, metabolism declines
and degeneration and death are outcomes of life. Environmental and
political foreshadow this. The meaning of death and aging varies from
one culture to another. Age categories are different in societies. Not
given by biology but by culture- Culture imposes sharp discontinuities on
what is physiological speaking a continuous process of aging, societies
talk about how to move from one age category and another. Biologically

Venda of south Africa John Blacking- Venda share duality universe, the
world of politics and economics and a parallel world where the spirits
live one we cannot see, this spiritual world is to them is the real world,
from birth to death sprits and humans cycle between these two worlds
and because they do the Venda are interested in this back and forth
movement, babies are said to be spiritual beings, because they have just
come from this real spirit world and are said to be incarnations of the
spirits. You get farther from the real world the more you age, as babies
grow they eventually marry and give birth and become distant from the
spiritual world and for this reason they do rituals to maintain the links to
the spirit world, and growing old for them is pleasurable 1st- brings
people power and influence in everyday life such as an elder, 2nd-
promises a deeper understanding of the spirit world through the

children you have, they provide a window to the spirit world, Metaphors
they use is transformation: they mean it is that one the body and the
spirit transform differently as it ages and two physical body grows and
decays and the spirit steadily progresses as the cycle grows. New babies
are seen as old spirits and can change through life experiences. People in
different places refer to the cycle in different ways. Very similar to
Christian doctrine we live and pass on,
Baruya of highland New Guinea M. Godeller the making of great men:
was to try to understand the nature of conflict hierarchy and
subordination, the Baruya lived a rudimentary life: were farmers and
supplements by pig breeding and salt production. Baruya was a classless
society but they were vast inequalities between men and women,
women getting the short end of the stick, men controlled everything of
importance, land on which they hunt, land is passed between men, only
men hunt, women are allowed to grow pigs, men control manufacture of
weapons and own them even the digging stick that women use for pig
farming, men also control the manufacture of salt and the recipe to

One of the ways they subordinate women is through the birth cycle.
Baruya are said to be more androgenis and hidden from view, children
live in an adrogenis world of woman through ages until 8, one day a
radical separation of female and male girls continue with the women and
