A state is usually dominated by a certain ethnic group
Nation-state is a site

oFoods, marriage, practices, overt symbols, value systems,
oPashtols of afgan: male autonomy(they are their own boss), equality,
self expression (guys can cry and stuff), aggressiveness, honour,
hospitality code (you wont treat guests same as your kids), purdah (for
boundary reasons, female only mate within group)
Ethnicity is functional
oDivision of labour is based on ethnicity
oPaschal are land owners
oTadjiky – farmers
oFilipina nannies in N.A
National Tradition

oWhen you get to the level of nation states, how can you know
anybody? (maybe just a dozen that you know)
oYou cant know it all so we make tradtion so we can feel like were in
the same page, background
