Document Summary
Male and female competition (lecture 4, chapter 5 and chapter 6) Sexual selection: advantage that certain individuals have over other individuals of the same sex. Intrasexual competition: out maneuver or drive away other members of the same sex this is what helps attract members of the opposite sex. (direct and indirect competition) Darwin made a distinction between primary sexual traits and secondary sexual traits. Sexual traits occur with organizing dose of androgen related specifically to the act of reproduction, whereas secondary sex characters are like signals for intrasexual competition. Male competition tends to be more confrontational and intense then female competition. Male fitness depends on maximizing mating frequency, which may lead to earlier death than females. Gadgil and bossert (1970); trivers (1972): created a model to explain earlier male mortality. They suggested that the success of male reproductive effort is dependent on the reproductive effort of male competitors.
