Document Summary

Organisms have many different type of characteristics. A cell is the smallest unit of life, and some organisms are single-celled. A tissue is a group of similar cells that perform a function. An example is nervous tissues are composed of millions of nerve cells that transmit signals to all parts of the body. Several tissues then join to form an organ. The main organ that receives signals from the nerves is the brain. Organs then work together to form an organ system. This example shows us how the levels of biological organization work together. Our cells use nutrient molecules from food as building blocks for energy (the capacity to do work) The information encoded in genes within each individual"s dna contains instructions that direct organismal reproduction. Before reproduction occurs, dna is replicated so that exact copies of genes are produced. Unicellular organisms reproduce asexually simply by dividing. New cells have the same genes and structures as the single parent.
