Permeability of cell membrane (review from last lec): Permeable: substances that can be permeable can move either way. If cell has to spend energy: active transport. Materials can cross thru via passive/simple diffusion a movement of substances through a permeable membrane following the concentration gradient (ex, with oxygen, co2, co bc higher concentration in the cell compared to outside the cell). These molecules could be lipid soluble molecules because they"re hydrophobic and are able to dissolve inside or outside. (like steroid hormones for example). Water can be introduced, but it has special portals to enter and leave the cell. We don"t say diffusion w water, we say osmosis. Remember, no energy is required w simple diffusion. Passive diffusion is only for small/lipid- soluble molecules. Bc these molecules are going from high concentration to low concentration, it is also passive, but thru portals (channels). With transport, there should be some integral proteins (channels/carriers).
