Document Summary

E. g: one of the goals is to protect and restore biodiversity: a) ecologists have 3 measures for the diversity. Compare and contrast alpha, beta and gamma diversity (6 marks) Alpha- local diversity, so the scale is local. Beta- difference between two habitats any scale so alpha or gamma- but they have to be on the same scale. Instrumental- things that we would have to replace if we didn"t have them, so replacement value. Intrinsic- hard to measure the value of it. And it is something we cannot manipulate (intrinsic growth rate- this is as fast as pop would grow without any barrier- so it comes from within population, regardless of external factors) Harder to put monetary value on these. Like if you like hiking you might want to preserve it. And we don"t need to do anything to nature to preserve it.
