Document Summary

Bio 206 term test 3 take home questions. Describe in molecular detail the composition, organization and function of the elongation factor ef-tu in the process of protein synthesis. Ef-tu is an elongation factor, which is required during protein synthesis. Ef-tu (along side ef: is a small gtp-binding protein and is a part of the mechanism that synthesizes new proteins by translation at the ribosome. Composition: ef-tu is a multi-domain bacterial/prokaryotic protein that has 3 distinct regions/domains and a switch hinge. Ef-tu has a latch which holds the domains of the protein together. When gtp is bound to ef-tu, the latch is closed and trna binds to the ribosome with the help of the factor. When gtp is hydrolysed to gdp, there is a small conformational change which opens the latch, causing trna to be released. Gdp is released with the help of ef-ts.
