Class 7: epistemology and how it relates to numerical research. Counting number of people evacuate from an area due to a hurricane: This number hold instrumental value, allowing organizations to plan resources to assist hurricane victims. It also holds symbolic value, signifying a group experiencing devastating trauma. Given these functions, numbers serve to communicate authority, and to establish legitimacy. Some believe that numbers represent facts, as objective truth. Others assume that they function as subjective accounts. Typically, quantitative research is presented as a form of inquiry in which scholars seek an objective truth, through their skill in design and precision in instrumentation: politics of numbers: what politics means in general. The process of creating numbers rests on the decisions made by a community of scholars. Through the research process, our subjective experience finds credence when shared with other through established procedures of observation, toward an inter- subjective understanding.
