Document Summary

List and describe some of the unique problems facing the earth scientist, and the way that natural experiments, laboratory experiments and computer modeling can be used to address these problems. Only partial information is available -> the further back in time you go, the harder it is. Processes can only be observed as they are acting now; they may have different in the past. Time and space scale for many processes much too large to observe; can"t design a practical experiment. Prediction: certain seismic waves shouldn"t be able to pass through it. Test: wait for an earthquake and observe. Partially recreate on a small scale a part of the earth. Prediction: if the conditions of the outer core are recreated in the laboratory, iron should be liquid. Prediction: a computer model that builds in everything we know about physics, chemistry and the composition and conditions of the interior of the earth will predict a liquids outer core.
