Document Summary

Definitions: volcano: a mountain constructed by the eruption of molten rock from earth"s interior. It is a vent that connects magma from the interior to earth"s surface. Igneous rocks solidify in one of two realms: extrusive or intrusive. The extrusive realm is above ground and the intrusive realm is below ground: magma chamber: an open cavity (or area of highly fractured rock) that contains a large quantity of magma. They inflate and deflate as they fill and empty. Some magma may rise through a conduit to reach the surface at a volcano to form extrusive rocks: conduits: a crater eruption develops from a pipe-shaped conduit, fissures: evolve into discrete vents that erupt from craters. Magma may erupt along a linear tear (a fissure). Fissure eruptions may display a curtain of fire : craters: are up to 500m across and 200m deep.
