Gemstones and diamonds, subjects of earth science, are all around us and used in some if our daily lives. It gives us better understanding of the planet that we live on: hazards, earthquakes, volcano eruptions, landslide, floods. Gives us a better understanding of our history: dinosaurs, geology/geobiology. Can help us learn what other planets may behave like in contrast to earth. Lets us know what resources we have access to and how lucrative they are: minerals, water, tar sands. Only partial information is available; the farther back in time you go, the worst it is because time erases geological record (sample are imperfect) extremely limited data. Not much experimental, mainly just observations (ex. Plate tectonics were different because earth was hotter and water on surface was different so it may have looked different in the past) Time and space scale for many processes much too large to observe; can"t design a practical experiment (ex.
