-Standard Canadian English is different today from what it was one hundred years ago.
All languages change, including the standard variety.
-Grammar is the linguistic system that exists in the mind of the speaker.
-LIN204 "English Grammar" focuses on the rules of word and sentence formation, but
not, for example, on the pronunciation of English words. The grammar of any given
language involves many interrelated systems such as sound, meaning, word formation,
and sentence formation. LIN204 focuses on the last two systems.
-Knowing the proper terminology used to describe different elements of grammar and
applying that knowledge to English will help you gain a deeper understanding of English
grammar. If you do not know the component parts of words and sentences or what they
are called, then you can't very well analyze them. Further, being able to analyze and
describe language will help you to understand grammatical queries on your own, without
having to rely on grammar textbooks.
-You apply for a job and receive notification that the company would like to meet with
you for a job interview. An appropriate closing would be "With much appreciation."
-It is best to write emails to instructors in a formal register. So, a salutation that would be
appropriate for an email to an instructor is “Dear Professor,” and NOT “hi prof!”, “to
whom it may concern,” or “help!!!”.
-One goal of this course is to train you in how to analyze English grammar.
-Linguists are interested in descriptive grammars. Like scientists, they observe; they aim
to describe what is possible in a language. Linguists acknowledge that speakers have
preferences and pass judgments about their language, but linguists do not pass judgments
in this way.
-All native speakers of English have a tacit knowledge of English grammar. It is when
