To do well on the midterm, you must discuss the term and how it relates to the material explored in the readings and/or lectures. African exceptionalism: the tendency of scholars to assume that (generally negative) political phenomena observed in african states are uniquely african, and not found elsewhere. Ascriptive category: any category whose membership depends primarily on characteristics seen to be hereditary. Ascriptive categories include ethnicity, caste, and sometimes religion. Big man : an autocratic president, who tends to stay in office for a long period of time, and whose personality dominates the state"s political life.
