Document Summary
Motivation refers to the moving force that energizes behaviour and relates to the process involved in goal-directed behaviour and the strength of motives. Motives re ect biological needs and psychosocial needs. Goal-directed behaviour is often directed by emotions. Elite athletes often work with sports psychologists in regards to motivation. Motives are the needs, wants, interests and desires that propel people in certain directions. Many theories view motivational forces in terms of drives. This approach to understanding motivation was explored most fully by clark hull in the 1940s/1950s. Drive theories apply the concept of homeostasis (a state of physiological equilibrium) to behaviour. A drive is an internal state of tension that motivates an organism to engage in activities that should reduce this tension. These unpleasant states of tension are viewed as disruptions of the preferred equilibrium. Drive theories have been very in uential and is used widely in modern psychology.
