Document Summary

Communication is the exchange of ideas, opinions, or facts between senders and receivers. It requires that a sender (an individual or group) compose and transmit a message, and that a receiver decode and understand the message. The sender and the receiver are therefore partners in the communication process. It is one means of expressing language but not the only means. It is possible to have language without speech (i. e. , sign language used by people who are deaf) and speech without language (i. e. , speech in parrots) Phonology: the system of speech sounds that an individual utters (rules about how sounds can be used and combined) i. e. , cat has three phonemes c-a-t. Syntax: the rules governing sentence structure, the way sequences of words are combined into phrases and sentences. Morphology: the form and internal structure of words. Semantics: the understanding of language, the component most directly concerned with meaning.
