Soc275h5 lecture 2: human beings: an endangered species. Two cases of gender inequality: the labour market and politics. The gender wage cap: the difference between men"s wage and women"s wage. Gender wage cap in ontario in 2011 is 26%. This means that when men earn a dollar, women earn 74%. 1987 pay equity act was the first act that measured this wage gap. This is due to women having lower pay jobs, including child care, principal of school. Some women leave for domestic responsibilities or fraternity leave. There is also the discriminitation at the point of hiring and promotion by the employer. 2nd example of gender inequality: political representation: The women percentage in the house of commons is around 20-25%. The percentage has still not risen up to 50%. Politics historically has been dominated my male initially. There is also a confidence difference between women and men. Men"s self-assessment is higher than how they actually do.
