Document Summary

Gerontology: is a discipline that systematically studies aging. Prejudice: being biased against someone or something; a negative judgment formed beforehand without the knowledge of the facts. Discrimination: unfair treatment of a person or group based on prejudice. Stereotype: an exaggerated and often prejudiced view of a type of person or group of people. Stereotypes lead to negative attitudes and biased behaviour. Elderspeak: a simplified speech like baby talk that some people use when they speak to older people. Consists of: few clauses, shorter phrases, filler phrases, simpler words, slower speech, longer pauses, use of words like dearie, cutie, and sweetie. Implications of elderspeak: creates low self-esteem, reduces a person"s ability to communicate effectively, decreases the quality of interaction, reduces the older person"s sense of control. Internalization: we start by growing old in other people"s eyes, then slowly we come to share their judgment (malcolm cowley, 1980).
