Gender is a social construct where individuals are expected to behave in specific ways. It also is shaped through socialization with other people. Gender helps and guides people to behave in specific way(s) in society. Gender and sex are not concepts that we apply to individuals, but rather ways of organizing human life. We are thinking about how gender shapes the conditions of peoples" existence. It helps to understand how gender and sex intersects with race and class. In contemporary theory, bourdieu"s idea of habitus is about connecting social structures (race, gender and class) with individual agents (the ability of an actor to choose his/her own path in life). This means that people are taught as free agents who have individual choice (ex. Bourdieu proposed class habitus, but he did not specifically talk about it in relationship to gender and sex. Habitus is a durable dispositions that function to organize practices and perceptions of practices.
