Lecture one impact of global climate change. Problems of the 21st century: high energy physics, poverty, population growth, climate change, extinction of species. Ep: memory loss patient: cannot remember old memories that he formed after the age of 30, and cannot form new memories. Virus took out two chunks of his brain which allows him to remember and form new memories: he thinks he"s thirty. People, especially children like consistency, but the world is constantly changing. Global change encompasses climate change, species extinction, land usage, and effects of pollutants. Erlich wrote a book about population explosion: we fire on short term happiness and ignore the long term consequences, evolving under evolutionary handicap, we respond to sight and certain events. Visual creatures, we believe what we can see only: cannot update person"s profile until we see them. Not adapt to see the change that"s constantly happening. Do animals perceive time: animals are stuck in time, they are living in the now.
