Document Summary

Seta is the name of the structure supporting the spore capsule. Protonema, gametophyte, antheridium, archegonium, egg cell, and spermatozoid carry only male or female determining genes. Spermatozoid is the unit of life cycle that is mobile and self propelled. Spermatozoid is the unit within the bryophytes life cycle has two self propelled flagella and chemo detectors which allow it to swim over short distances towards the female gametophyte to fertilize the egg cell. Their way of moving water (cell to cell diffusion) is insufficient to service a large plant body. Because they lack enforced cells or tissue to keep them upright beyond a small maximum size. Gametophyte (haploids) are more dominant in bryophytes. Antheridium, archegonium, egg cell, gametophyte, spermatozoid and protonema are haploids. Spore is the unit of life cycle that is wind dispersed. Gametophyte and protonema are photosynthetic in a typical bryophyte. Sporophyte, wall of spore capsule and seta carry both male and female determining genes.
