Document Summary

B16 final: possible short answers/ terminology, in no particular order. Internal standard: a compound as similar as possible to the analyte of interest, but gives slightly different responses in the detector, improves precision of analysis. Masking agent: reagent added to prevent reaction of some metal with edta: example: ammonia, cyanide, vitamin c. Demasking agent: releases metal ion from masking agent: examples: acetic acid, formaldehyde. Chromophore: a group of atoms that absorb radiation, examples: conjugated, unsaturated bonds, halides. Absorption: radiation absorbed by unexcited atoms as their electrons are promoted to an excited state. Emission: radiation emitted by excited atoms as they return to a lower energy state. Endcapping: replacing accessible silanol (si-oh) groups in a bonded stationary phase with trimethylsilyl groups to prevent unwanted interactions with polar molecules and ion exchange. Electroactive species: any material that is electrically active, responsive, or changes shape in the presence of and electric field or electrical stimuli.
