Key Terms
1) Hinduism (e.g., discuss its origin, teachings, central concepts such as Dharma and
Karma, and reincarnation, and its role in Indian culture/society):
The concept Hindu is a Persian word developed in practice from the period of the Delhi
Sultanate, associated with any tradition that is domestic to India as compared to Islam. To its
supporters, Hinduism is the established way of life.
The scriptures were communicated verbally in verse form to help support memorization for many
centuries before they were recorded in written creed. Over many centuries, sages purified the
education and augmented the canon. An abundant discourse of documents are categorized as
Hindu, separated into Smriti defined as remembered and Śruti classified as revealed doctrines.
These documents discuss ideologies, folklore, and religious theory, and supply knowledge on the
tradition dharma known as religious living.
Important ideologies in Hindu beliefs include Dharma which concerns morals and
responsibilities, Samsāra which is the persisting cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth, Karma
which revolves around action and consequences, Moksha defined as the liberation from samsara,
and the various Yogas which are practices or paths.
