Terror was most radical and repressive period of the french revolution, yet most democratic phase as well. Power centralized even as society was democratized, lots of contradictions. These contradictions continued to the napoleonic era, and the french revolution involved all of europe even before napoleon. Napoleon has own perspective of empire in the continents, france already has colonies in the caribbean. Declaration of rights of men didn"t apply to everyone, only white men. Jews, protestants got rights, but not slaves in haiti, slaves led their own fight in. Haiti to gain greater rights, seized from their owners. A key concept was the existence of guilds, which is seen as a collective guided by a guild master. Control of guilds was monopolized so not much can be done in terms of social mobility. Apprentices often slept on the floor and ate scraps from the tables, but they were often abused by cooks whom gave apprentices cat food, so they resented cats.
