Methodological Issues in conducting research on hospitalized older people
- Objective: to describe challenges in conducting research with hospitalized geriatrics patients.
- Design-quasi-experimental longitudinal study with in-person interviews at baseline and
discharge and a three month post discharge telephone interview. Study protocol required
baseline interviews within 48 hours of admission for patients or 72 hours for proxies
- 240 patients, mean age 83.8 years, high risk for functional decline in hospitalization.
- Admitted to an emergency room to a general medical unit
Notes on article
- Difficult challenges in the hospital setting include acuity and illness severity of the patients, the
intensity and rapid pace of care, the multiple procedures and care nee ds- all of which contribute
to making patients unable or unavailable to participate in research studies.
- Only the case-control study by Kelsey et al directly examined specific problems encountered
during a study of older inpatients. The study described here differed from the Kelsey et al. study
in several respects such as using a quasi-experimental design having a minimum age of 70 and
including specific measures to quantify problems with enrolling patients and conducting
interviews.
