Define: the idea that cultures are progressing along a linear scale, with western countries considered the most advanced. Defines development as industrialization, intensive agriculture, scientific/technological solutions and economic liberalism, and seeks to apply these concepts to the global south. Rostow (5 stages of economic growth 1959) Context: based on the european experience of development during the industrial. Revolution (without acknowledgement of colonization), and the successful rebuilding of infrastructure following the second world war. President truman"s initiative to provide us aid to countries in exchange for them adopting liberal ideology (democracy/free trade). Influenced by the ideological conflict between the liberal west and communist east during the cold war (modernization = anti- communism). Embraces many of the idea of neo-liberalism. Dependency theory is a response to the blind spots or modernization (ignoring colonialism). Path dependence - the idea that decisions we are faced with depend on past knowledge trajectory and decisions made, and are thus limited by the current competence base.
