Introduction to Media Studies
MDS A01 H3
Assignment #2: Due July 31st
Assignment: Choose from Media Lab 5 (p.147), Media Lab 7 (p. 193), OR Media Lab
8 (p. 216), and write a 3-4 page well-organized, analytic essay in which you take on
the tasks listed in the Lab. Of course, please use write your essay in your own words.
If you choose Media Lab 5, please include your experience with television shows in
the assignment. Because it asks you to draw from your experience, and not simply
one episode of one program, your answer will need to be broad. Please “dig” for your
experience online, meaning search for examples of TV shows that form your
experience and background, and include links to some of the episodes you are
discussing, and include in your references. Do not answer the questions in the Lab in
just a general or vague way. Be specific!
If you choose Media Lab 7, you should include more than a 5 minute clip. Please draw
on one episode you are familiar with. Next, please watch any episode of “The
Honeymooners” on YouTube for contrast and comparison. Be sure to indicate which
episode (yes, I know them all). Answer the questions in the Lab relative to your
selected episode, and also include whether or not you see similar treatments in The
Honeymooners. Please “dig” for your evidence online, meaning search for examples
of your selected episode online, e.g. YouTube and include in your references.
If you choose Media Lab 8, you may work with TV shows instead of movies, if you
wish, e.g. Queer as Folk, Will and Grace, Modern Family. Please draw on one episode
you are familiar with. Next, please watch the following episode of “All in the Family:
Judging Books By Covers” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qofG9SQBoaQ ,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zY7HqCYgpM, and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J680qIX6MTQ.
Answer the questions in the Lab relative to your selected episode, and also include
whether or not you see similar treatments in All in the Family. Please “dig” for your
evidence online, meaning search for examples of your selected episode online, e.g.
YouTube and include in your references.
Requirements/Structure: At a minimum your paper should include:
1. Your name and title of the paper at the top of the first page. Please print the
attached grading rubric and attach it to the back of your assignment.
2. A one paragraph introduction in which you introduce your subject of analysis. Do
not assume your reader is aware that your essay is in response to an assignment;
introduce your magazines, newspaper, or proposed regulation in an organic fashion
so that your essay addresses a broader audience than just this classroom.
3. A clear and concise analytic thesis statement or claim about the task at hand. What
are you trying to prove or establish?
4. An analysis using relevant principles drawn from the textbook and class discussion.
Your goal is to effectively combine the theoretical principles with your own critical
observations.
