Introduction to Media Studies
MDS A01 H3
Assignment #1: Due June 5 th
Assignment: Choose from Media Lab 1 (p. 44), Media Lab 2 (p. 69), OR Media Lab 3
(p. 94) and write a 3-4 page well-organized, analytic essay in which you take on the
tasks listed in the Lab.
If you choose Media Lab 1, you should analyze two magazines from a single publisher
(Time-Warner, for example) and present an argument in which you address patterns
of ownership as outlined in the chapter on Marxist analysis. You need not answer all
of the questions listed in the media lab; use them as a starting point, but your essay
should focus on one or two main applications of Marxist analysis.
If you choose Media Lab 2, you should base your analysis on a single issue of any
newspaper. Your discussion should speak to the ways in which news-gathering and
news-reporting conventions shape the specific issue you are analyzing. Include
specific detail on layout, language, structure, and so on. You cannot discuss every
aspect of your chosen newspaper, so be selective in your analysis and draw on the
best examples only.
If you choose Media Lab 3, you should identify a social problem within a Canadian
context and propose a regulation to address the problem. Your essay should set up
the context of the problem you have identified, propose a regulation to address this
problem, and then justify this regulation in terms of the questions listed in the
assignment. Again, you need not answer all of the questions listed, but be sure to
explain and provide a logical rationale for your choices.
Requirements/Structure: At a minimum your paper should include:
1. Your name and title of the paper at the top of the first page. Please print the
attached grading rubric and attach it to the back of your assignment.
2. A one paragraph introduction in which you introduce your subject of analysis. Do
not assume your reader is aware that your essay is in response to an assignment;
introduce your magazines, newspaper, or proposed regulation in an organic fashion
so that your essay addresses a broa
