Summer 2012 Introduction to Media Studies MDS A01 H3 Assignment #1: Due June 5 th Assignment: Choose from Media Lab 1 (p. 44), Media Lab 2 (p. 69), OR Media Lab 3 (p. 94) and write a 3-4 page well-organized, analytic essay in which you take on the tasks listed in the Lab. If you choose Media Lab 1, you should analyze two magazines from a single publisher (Time-Warner, for example) and present an argument in which you address patterns of ownership as outlined in the chapter on Marxist analysis. You need not answer all of the questions listed in the media lab; use them as a starting point, but your essay should focus on one or two main applications of Marxist analysis. If you choose Media Lab 2, you should base your analysis on a single issue of any newspaper. Your discussion should speak to the ways in which news-gathering and news-reporting conventions shape the specific issue you are analyzing. Include specific detail on layout, language, structure, and so on. You cannot discuss every aspect of your chosen newspaper, so be selective in your analysis and draw on the best examples only. If you choose Media Lab 3, you should identify a social problem within a Canadian context and propose a regulation to address the problem. Your essay should set up the context of the problem you have identified, propose a regulation to address this problem, and then justify this regulation in terms of the questions listed in the assignment. Again, you need not answer all of the questions listed, but be sure to explain and provide a logical rationale for your choices. Requirements/Structure: At a minimum your paper should include: 1. Your name and title of the paper at the top of the first page. Please print the attached grading rubric and attach it to the back of your assignment. 2. A one paragraph introduction in which you introduce your subject of analysis.
