Document Summary

Research: a way of finding out about the world through objective and systematic information gathering. Objective and systematic are the traits that separate the outcomes of the careful study of ob from opinion and common sense. Knowing how researchers conduct research is important to ob because: you should be aware of how the information being presented was collected. Increases confidence in the advantages of systematic study over common sense: you will likely encounter reports, in the press etc. , of interventions to improve ob, such as job redesign or employee development programs. A critical perspective is necessary to differentiate those interventions that are carefully designed and evaluated from useless or damaging ones. Those backed by good research deserve the greatest confidence. All research in ob begins with a question about work or organization. Might stem from a formal theory in the field. Usually stems from an immediate organizational problem. Hypothesis: a formal statement of the expected relationship between two variables.
