Document Summary

Vpma93 lecture 1 introduction to listening and sound. Sound is caused by some sort of material being agitated in some way either being struck. Vibration cause changing in the atmospheric pressure causing changes in sound in vibrating way. Sound ways travel in the same speed, the difference is the number of waves created the object. (less waves= low frequency, more waves= high frequency) The faster the vibrations, the higher the pitch. Controlling how long it takes the sound to leave the instrument will determine whether the instrument will produce a high/low pitch. The tuba produces the lowest pitch: tone a sound with a definite, consistent pitch, resonance is the cause of sound production in musical instruments eg. sound speaker. An instrument can be forced into vibrating at one of its standing wave patterns if another interconnected object pushes it with one of those frequencies.
